Enrollment FAQs
How many openings do you have and what is my chance of getting into the school?
The chances of getting into the school vary from year to year. The earlier you apply, the better chance you have! The class sizes for each class are listed below:
The Twos class size: 10
The Threes class size: 14
The Fours class size: 15
What is the application and acceptance process?
After the application deadline, applicants will be emailed about their status within about a week. The email will have detailed instructions and explanations. See the Enrollment Process section for details.
My child’s birthday is close to your cutoff. Will you consider letting him/her into the next class up?
Our cutoff is September 1st, and children must turn 2 before starting at KNS. If you have a child close to the cutoff or who turns two during the school year, please reach out to info@knscoop.org so we can discuss your options.
Does my child need to be potty trained?
No! And if your child is potty training, our teachers will work with you to reinforce whatever you are working on at home.
How often will I be co-oping?
About twice a month on average, but it depends on how often your child’s class meets. Co-op slots are divided evenly among the families in the class and scheduled by the Participation Chair based on families’ availability, so it may range from 1-4 times a month. We also offer half co-op and no co-op options.
What if I can’t co-op on my assigned day?
Your scheduling preferences are always taken into consideration, and if something comes up suddenly, you can ask to switch with someone else in your class or contact someone on the paid co-oper list. The schedule is set twice per year, prior to each semester.
Can someone other than me co-op?
Any trusted adult may fulfill your family's co-op duties as long as each co-oper has completed the mandatory training meeting, paperwork, and background check. We also have a list of paid co-opers who you can pay to co-op for you (usually used for last-minute schedule changes).
What is expected of families, in addition to co-oping?
Each family will be given a family job. In addition, each family must fulfill 12 volunteer hours throughout the year and attend a few meetings. Families receive a handbook before the school year begins with details on the school’s policies, procedures, and programs.
What does a family job entail?
Family jobs range from being a Board member to managing a particular project or program to serving on a committee. Family jobs vary in time commitment throughout the year. Some jobs are concentrated at specific times of year and others are more evenly spread throughout the year. Family jobs are assigned based on each family’s interests and abilities.
How can I earn volunteer hours?
There are a wide variety of opportunities to earn your volunteer hours throughout the year! These range from helping to clean and maintain the school on a maintenance day to soliciting donations for our silent auction. And if you fall a little short, families can buy out some hours as well.
How many meetings are families required to attend?
Just three! We have general membership meetings in the fall and spring. We also have a mandatory co-oper training in the fall.
